Massachusetts College Grants and Loans

Massachusetts Grants

MASSGrant Undergraduate students living in Massachusetts and who are enrolled in a certificate, associates or bachelor's program at an approved educational institution are eligible for a MASSGrant. These are need based and funded by the Massachusetts legislature.

Application is made through the FAFSA, which must be filed by May 1 to meet the deadline. Your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) must be between 0-3850 to qualify. The MASSGrant awards vary from $300 and $2300 per year depending on the school attended and the financial need of the student. More info is available at the MASSGrant page.


Massachusetts Gilbert Grant The Massachusetts Gilbert Matching Student Grant Program (GMSGP) makes funds available for participating schools to distribute to needy Massachusetts students studying in a Massachusetts school. The Gilbert Grants range from $200 to $2500 per school year.

Massachusetts Educational Rewards Grant Program This grant program was passed by the Massachusetts Legislature to provide financial assistance to dislocated or low income workers enabling them to receive education to allow transition into jobs in high demand occupations. The grant award can range from a minimum of $200 and a maximum of $3,000. Massachusetts Part-Time Grant Massachusetts realizes that many of it's students are finding it necessary to return to the classroom in a part-time setting due to family or job obligations. The Mass Part Time Grant considers this and helps these non-traditional students finance their higher education opportunities.

Massachusetts Public Service Grant Program This grant provides assistance to the surviving family members of Mass residents killed or missing in the line of public service duty in Massachusetts. Included are Massachusetts Police Officers, Firefighters or Corrections Officers killed while performing their duties, veterans whose service was credited to the Commonwealth and who were killed in action or died as a result of such service and those missing in action during the VietNam campaign.

For those attending a Mass. public college or university, the award is for the amount of the yearly tuition. For those choosing an independent college or university, the award is equal to the UMass Amherst tuition, not to exceed $2500 per academic year.

Mass Cash Grant Program This program complements the Need-Based Tuition Waiver Program. It is geared towards helping financially needy students with other uncovered costs, such as mandatory fees.

Massachusetts Loans

Massachusetts No Interest Loan (NIL) This program provides a state-funded no interest loan to eligible Massachusetts residents enrolled in a certificate, associate or bachelors degree program in Massachusetts. The loans range from $1000-$4000 with a maximum lifetime limit of $20,000. A FAFSA is required for this award. Check with your school's financial aid office for deadlines and other requirements.


MEFA Undergraduate Loan The Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA) has set up this fixed interest rate loan for undergrads. It features no application fee, a 4% origination fee and a 15 year repayment schedule with no prepayment penalty. Students can choose either an immediate repayment plan at 7.75% or a deferred payment plan at 8.89%. These are the base rates, the actual APR is higher. MEFA Graduate Loan The Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA) has set up this fixed interest rate loan for undergrads. It features no application fee, a 15 year repayment schedule with no prepayment penalty and a 4% origination fee if you apply with a co-borrower (7% without a co-borrower). Students have a deferred payment plan at 8.89% interest rate. This is the base rate, the actual APR is higher. For more information on loan requirements, visit the MEFA Graduate Loan page.
