Texas 529 College Savings PlanTexas Direct-Sold 529 PlanEstablished and maintained by the Texas Prepaid Higher Education Tuition Board, the Direct-Sold plan is managed by OFI Private Investments Inc., a subsidiary of OppenheimerFunds, Inc. As with other 529 plans, any U.S. resident can take part in the Texas 529 plan. However, they should check with their own state to learn about possible tax benefits not available when investing in the Texs plan. You can open an account with as little as $25 and the earnings will be Federal tax free as long as the disbursements are used for eligible college expenses.Texas offers two age-based investment options, blended and index. Money invested in either of these will begin as a more aggressive investment, then be automatically moved toward more conservative investments as the age of the beneficiary progresses towards college age. There are also four static portfolios: two 100% Equities, blended and index and and two Balanced Funds, blended and index. Three individual portfolios round out the choioces, Fixed Income Portfolio, Inflation-Protected Bond Portfolio and Money Market Portfolio. These last three are geared toward the more conservative investors and those with a short timeline until college.
